Baking Soda, alternatively known as Sodium Carbonate is used a lot in, you guessed it, baking. This is because it has a leavening ability, making the dough rise by producing carbon dioxide. It is also a household item, having many uses apart from being used in baking. It also has some health benefits in addition to being such a useful item.

In the article, we take a look at five problems and see how baking soda can solve them for you. Interested? Read on.

  1. Treating Heartburn

We’ve all experienced heartburn at some point or another. This condition is also known as acid reflux – it manifests as a burning sensation in the lower chest region. Heartburn occurs when acid from the stomach flows back up into your food pipe or esophagus, which is the connecting pipe between your mouth and your stomach.

Heartburn primarily occurs due to stress, overeating, and when you eat particularly spicy or oily food.

Baking soda can help to alleviate heartburn because it is alkaline in nature. Alkaline substances can neutralize acidity in the stomach and reduce the symptoms of acid reflux. Mix a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of chilled water and slowly ingest it, giving you relief from heartburn.

2.  Help whiten your yellowing teeth

If you have stained teeth, and are looking for a simple home remedy to whiten your teeth, baking soda is a great option. Research shows that toothpaste products containing baking soda are much more efficient at whitening stained teeth and at removing plaque than toothpaste products with no baking soda in them.

This is because baking soda has abrasive properties that permit it to break down the bonds of molecules that are responsible for staining your teeth. In addition to this, it also acts as an anti-microbial agent and protects your teeth from bacterial infections as well.

3. Relieve the pain caused by Canker sores

These are painful, small, shallow ulcers that form in your mouth, and as long as they are there, they making eating, talking, and even swallowing your own spittle into your throat extremely uncomfortable. These sores are unlike cold sores which are contagious, but nevertheless, painful and plain irritating.

Baking soda based mouthwash is great for relieving pain caused by canker sores. It can be made by mixing half a teaspoon of soda to a glass of lukewarm water and mixing it. This mixture can be used to rinse your mouth. Do it once a day till the sores heal.

4. Relieve itchy skin

If you were bitten by a bug or a mosquito, you will remember the itchy feeling associated with the bite and how uncomfortable it was. Thankfully, a baking soda bath can help alleviate itchy skin and help you feel comfortable.

It can also help you relieve sunburnt skin as well.

So, how do you make a baking soda bath? It is simple. Take one to two cups of baking soda, and add it to a lukewarm bucket of water. Mix well and apply on the affected area.

5. Help increase your physical endurance

Ok, this might seem like a stretch, but hear me out. No BS here. Baking soda is regarded as a good supplement and is used a lot by athletes to improve their performance.

When you exercise, your muscles start to produce lactic acid, which is responsible for the fatigue that sets in after a while and is accompanied by a burning feeling. Lactic acid, being an acidic product, causes a reduction in pH levels in the muscles.

Baking soda is an alkaline product, it can help bring up the pH levels in your muscles, and reduce the buildup of lactic acid, thus helping you stay at peak performance for longer.
